Accelerating the creation of next-gen video services

ARRIS, now a part of communications technology innovator  CommScope, has partnered RDK Management — an open source consortium — to launch RDK Lab Accelerator.

Built on ARRIS VIP5202W UHD IP, the new accelerator can empower service providers and developers to come up with services and applications quickly.

Steve Heeb, president and general manager of RDK, said: “Many operators simply want an off-the-shelf RDK set-top box experience to test and develop their next-gen video services, and ARRIS has made that easy with the RDK Lab Accelerator.”

The RDK Lab Accelerator is a 4K/UHD set-top box with built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and voice control compatibility to provide next-gen connectivity experience for users.

Its latest version of RDK open source software is pre-installed, thereby enabling customisable services through integrated configuration tools. This will greatly reduce the time spent on sourcing for new solutions and maintaining customer relationships for service providers.

Heeb added: “Powered by RDK software and pre-loaded with the Metrological App store, it provides a reference integration that allows operators to expedite application development, testing, and service deployment.”

Larry Robinson, senior vice-president and segment leader, Customer Premises Equipment at CommScope, said: “As the global leader in set-tops, we are fully focused on providing the widest range of hardware and software solutions that meets the diverse needs of our customers … allowing them to customise their own offering, [and] deploy flexible and cost-effective solutions.”

The open source software platform can be a game-changer as service providers will be able to manage their own devices; control their business models; and customise their apps and data analytics to improve the customer experience and drive business growth.
