Ericsson harnessing 5G to create an ‘Internet of Senses’

By 2026 there will be 3.5 billion 5G subscriptions, predicted Ericsson. And to capture the emerging possibilities, Ericsson has announced a new purpose and vision — the former highlights creating connections that make the unimaginable possible, and the latter envisions limitless connectivity that can improve lives, redefine businesses and pioneer a sustainable future.

One area that Ericsson will be addressing is reimagining entertainment through an “Internet of Senses” that blends virtual and real worlds together. For instance, Ericsson wants to allow home viewers to experience live game data superimposed in front of their eyes, or the ability to experience the sound, touch and smell of live game action.

Stella Medlicott, SVP & Head of Group Function Marketing and Corporate Relations, Ericsson, added, “Connectivity is key to reducing human impact on the planet, and will help bridge the digital divide, but we also see the potential for our technology to touch even more parts of society.”
