Eye-on: What key solutions @ NAB 2024 that APAC broadcasters should keep an eye on

By Shaun Lim

With the theme Capture New Audiences, the eagerly anticipated NAB 2024 will provide a glimpse into the latest innovations in technology and new products that can empower broadcasters to capture the attention of audiences in the years to come. Marking the 201st edition of the NAB convention, the focus on NextGen TV is likely to be pronounced, with discussions likely to centre around the ATSC 3.0 standard, along with hot-button topics such as Free Ad-Supported TV (FAST), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and how they can better support the content creators of today.

With nearly 27% of attendees to NAB 2024, taking place from April 13-17 at the Las Vegas Convention Centre, coming from more than 160 countries – including broadcasters from the Asia-Pacific region – it is also worth considering what trade visitors ought to be looking for at this year’s show.

APB+ decided to ask Tim Banner, Senior Solutions Specialist, Magna Systems & Engineering, what are some relevant innovative solutions that Asian broadcasters at NAB should seek out and investigate.

Banner answered, “There are three key solutions with new and relevant technologies for APAC that I believe worth investigating at NAB 2024.

“The first is manifold CLOUD, a live production software that runs on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS), field programmable gate array (FPGA) programmable acceleration cards (PAC).”

At its core, manifold CLOUD is a service-oriented software that utilises an on-demand configurable pool of shared resources allocated within a private cloud environment. Hardware resources (PAC) are pooled together in clusters which can be thought of as virtual private clouds or, simply, a broadcast production.

Typically, a cluster has a fixed purpose for a set period of time, such as the “6pm News” or the “Sunday Soccer Game.” Multiple clusters can be operated simultaneously, each with different services utilising a shared hardware resource pool from one or more data centres.

Users operate manifold CLOUD services through a single-sign-on secure web UI which facilitates access to clusters. With its unique and innovative architecture and flexibility, the manifold CLOUD live production software is particularly relevant for APAC broadcasters now and will become increasingly so in the near future.

The second APAC-relevant technology solution, said Banner, comes from Actus Digital —  look out for its intelligent broadcast media platform, which includes AI speech-to-text, automatic ad detection and rating analysis.

Actus Digital provides one of the industry’s most intelligent broadcast media platforms for broadcast recording, monitoring and compliance, live clipping for over-the-top (OTT) and social applications and video-on-demand (VoD) as well as catch-up TV clipping.

This particular broadcast recording platform also complies with all TV regulatory requirements, including loudness and closed caption regulations. The clips creation platform component provides a completely automated workflow for live clips creation, including ingest, editing, dynamic metadata, transcoding and exporting to social media, OTT or any other platforms.

The Actus Digital intelligent broadcast media platform solution is simple to use, cost-effective and offers APAC users the ability to monitor and edit multiple streams at the same time.

Actus Digital’s key operations and market segments worldwide include APAC broadcasters, content owners, national regulators, media operators (cable, satellite, and playout), media monitoring and analysis agencies, internet and telephony content providers and monitoring services.

The third broadcast solution worth investigating for the APAC region is the Chyron LIVE end-to-end, cloud-native live video production platform.

According to Banner, you can be anywhere in the APAC region, with an internet connection and a simple web-browser, be able to access the Chyron LIVE platform and cut/mix live sources, adjust audio levels across all feeds, play out PRIME-quality graphic packages, create unlimited multimedia playlists and produce live replays.

Chyron LIVE’s interface is easy-to-operate via complete touchscreen control, traditional computer mouse-and-click or even from external control devices.

Chyron LIVE transforms its PRIME Platform’s production switcher, real-time motion graphics, clip playout and audio mixer modules into a web-accessible all-in-one production environment.  One can cut and dissolve between video sources, overlay Chyron-grade CG graphics, play your clip packages, and get the right audio levels in the mix.

As the true magic of a top-tier sports production happens in replay, with Chyron LIVE, one  can also comb through camera footage, clip off a replay clip, add dynamic elements to highlight play and add it to a playlist for highlight reel playout.

Bearing in mind that broadcast and production costs are increasingly being scrutinised by broadcast professionals across the APAC region, Chyron LIVE is deemed not only as a very cost-effective solution but also offers great pay-by-production-hour options to broadcasters and content creators, thereby allowing them to wield the power of a six-figure control room in the palm of their hand for a fraction of the cost!
