Harmonic brings cloud efficiency into broadcast and OTT space

Cloud technology and software-based approach for media processing are Harmonic’s highlights at Inter BEE 2018

VOS 360 is Harmonic’s media processing software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution that is designed to cover the entire media processing chain — from ingest to playout, transcoding, encryption, packaging and origin. At Inter BEE 2018, Harmonic will be showcasing a wide range of business models for VOS 360 video SaaS, including time-shift TV, video-on-demand (VoD), live sports streaming, dynamic ad insertion for over-the-top (OTT), and targeted advertising for broadcast.

For content monetisation, Harmonic will be demonstrating server-side dynamic ad insertion for OTT and targeted advertising for broadcast, as well as blackout content scheduling and management. With this hybrid broadcast broadband television (HbbTV)-supported solution, operators can personalise content delivery per audience, geography or syndication, said Harmonic.

Tony Berthaud, vice-president of sales, Asia-Pacific, at Harmonic, explained: “Being agile is a critical necessity for today’s content and service providers, given the speed which technology and consumer viewing habits are changing. At Inter BEE 2018, we will bring the latest innovations in software and the cloud to speed up time to market for video streaming services, driving new workflow efficiencies, better monetisation and exceptional video quality.”

Alongside VOS 360, Harmonic will also present its end-to-end 4K/Ultra HD (UHD) high dynamic range (HDR) workflow solution, which is capable of supporting applications such as channel origination, live streaming and VoD. At the heart of Harmonic’s 4K/UHD HDR solution comprises the Spectrum X media server and Electra X encoder, which deliver “pristine video quality at low bitrates”. The solution can be deployed on-premises or in the cloud as part of Harmonic’s VOS 360 video SaaS.

Harmonic will be exhibiting at booth 6212 during Inter BEE 2018, which will be taking place from November 14-16 at the Makuhari Messe convention centre in Tokyo.
