Infinity Multimedia shoots Asia’s ‘first’ 4K/HDR concert

20 units of Sony 4K/HDR cameras were deployed for Taiwanese band Mayday’s concert in Kaohsiung

Established in 1986, Infinity Multimedia Production has more than 30 years of media expertise in catering to Taiwan’s broadcasting and content creation market.

The next task for Infinity, despite the challenges, is to explore 4K/Ultra HD (UHD) and high dynamic range (HDR). Lin Jiawei, vice-president, Infinity Multimedia Productions, explained: “At the moment, we see the lack of adoption of 4K/UHD in the Taiwan market and it is difficult to expand the market. Nonetheless, we are glad that we have customers who understand the true value and possibilities 4K/UHD HDR can bring to viewers.”

One of Infinity’s first 4K/UHD HDR projects was Taiwanese band Mayday’s March 2017 concert in Kaohsiung. The focus of the project was to record the entire concert in 4K/UHD HDR, so that the footage can be used for future plans, such as a feature film.

After careful consideration, Infinity decided to film the concert with Sony’s equipment, utilising the S-Log3 and HDR XAVC formats to achieve the highest picture quality possible.

Lin continued: “We realise the potential that HDR brings and our customer was also keen for another breakthrough in live concert production. With Sony’s S-Log3, it helps bring out images in HDR beautifully. Not only does it improve the recording clip quality, the format also allows our post-production unit to reproduce a better video.”

To fulfil 20 channels of 4K/UHD HDR recording, Infinity deployed a number of Sony equipment. These include nine HDC-4300 4K/HD system cameras, eight PMW-F55 Super 35mm 4K CMOS sensor compact CineAlta cameras, one HDC-P43 4K/HD point-of-view cameras, two PXW-FS7 4K Super 35mm Exmor CMOS sensor XDCAM cameras, as well as the BVM-X300 4K Trimaster EL OLED critical reference monitor.

Apart from the equipment line-up, Sony’s SR Live for HDR workflow also lies at the heart of the production, equipping the Infinity team with the ability to achieve images where reality and details are priorities alongside more control and increased freedom during capture.

Capable of converting into numerous broadcast and delivery formats in real time, the workflow delivers 4K/UHD HDR and HD standard dynamic range (SDR) simultaneously with an HD-based production system. According to Infinity Multimedia, this is “extremely important” as the company needed to broadcast live in SDR while ensuring the HDR format is available for post production.
