NBA shooting hoops in India

After gaining momentous growth in China as reported by APB, NBA is now expanding its reach to the fifth largest economy in the world — India. Popularised by the North American Leagues, the NBA India Games 2019 marks the first NBA games staged on Indian soil.

The Indiana Pacers and Sacramento Kings will play on October 4 and 5 at Mumbai’s NSCI Dome.

NBA fans in India can download the NBA App on iOS and Android for the latest results, updates, scores, analysis, schedules, highlights and more.

Since 2017, Sony Pictures Networks India has broaden NBA’s fan base in India by introducing Hindi commentary. According to Sony, the 2018-19 season has garnered over 90 million viewers in India. Furthermore, the NBA Finals 2019 was also live-streamed to India for the first time on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and SONY channels, including SONY TEN 1, TEN 3 as well as SONY ESPN.

NBA’s seriousness in developing the India market is reflected in its devotion in Noida — an academy that recruits local talent through training schemes. Diane Gotua, vice-president, global business operations commissioner’s office, NBA, told Forbes India: “It’s not a monetisation push for us.

“There are studies that show our brand and product is much more relevant in markets where we have been able to find local talent.”

Vivek Ranadive, owner of Sacramento Kings, added that basketball is quickly gaining popularity in India as it reflects the same cultural attitude displayed in Bollywood and crickets.
