Sony HDC-5500 able to meet Infinity’s exacting 4K demands

A broadcast equipment provider, Taiwan’s Infinity Multimedia, has also been offering a complete 4K/Ultra HD (UHD) production and post-production workflow solution since 2015.

In 2016, Infinity unveiled Taiwan’s first 4K/UHD and high dynamic range (HDR) outside broadcast (OB) van; and in 2017, provided the broadcast support for the 2017 Summer Universiade Games and produced Taiwan’s first 4K/HDR concert for popular Taiwanese band Mayday.

The collaboration with Mayday continued last year, when Infinity was involved in producing the 2021 Mayday New Year’s Eve music concert. For the production, Infinity acquired Sony’s HDC-5500 4K/HD live broadcast and studio camera, the HDCU-5500 camera control units, the RCP-3500 remote control panel for the HDC/HSC/HXC series camera, and the HDC-P50 Point-of-View (POV) system camera.

Lin Jiawei, Vice-President of Infinity Multimedia, highlighted, “Live concerts like the New Year’s Eve music concert feature a mix of LED displays, low lighting and strobe lighting. These can be extremely challenging for certain cameras.

“We identified the Sony HDC-5500 camera and the other equipment as they are used by international broadcasters and able to meet Infinity’s exacting demands.”

The HDC-5500 is the “world’s first” 2/3-inch 4K/HD camera with a global shutter and three complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensors. Directors and operators, said Sony, appreciate the new 2/3-inch sensors in the HDC-5500 as they help reduce moiré patterns and can handle strobe lighting effects.

Another plus point for the HDC-5500 is its high sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio and wide dynamic range for HDR acquisition. Lin added, “The Sony HDC-5500 allowed us to push our creativity. Its global shutter system gives our crew the versatility to also capture smooth motion movement in sports events.”
